Battle of Plywood’s – BWR vs Marine

Plywood is an essential item in the household as well as in commercial uses, so it is critical to choose the correct plywood that suits its needs. Here we will be talking about two such types of plywood that are BWR grade plywood and marine plywood. So let’s find out which plywood is best and for what situations.

BWR grade plywood: BWR stands for boiling water resistant. It is waterproof and used for exterior purposes. Mainly used in furniture making it is a top choice for carpenters. It is good quality plywood used for making kitchen cabinets and other kitchen furniture.

Marine grade plywood:As the name suggests marine this kind of plywood has a lot of durability in harsh weather conditions. It of the most superior quality and it is mainly used in boat making as it can withstand the massive rushes of water. The thing that makes marine plywood stand out is the use of wood veneers and phenolic resins. It is a synthetic plastic resin that forms an excellent waterproofing with increasing the durability of the plywood.

As we have understood the type of plywood we are discussing let’s find out their differences:

Marine Grade Plywood                       BWR Grade Plywood
It is of superior quality and more extended durability. Its quality is a bit inferior but better than commercial MR grade plywood.
Greater water resistance as the name suggests marine. Can be submerged in water for about 72 hours without damage. It is alsowaterproof, but waterproofing is a bit less than the marine grade.
Phenol Formaldehyde resin is used, and it is undiluted hence giving better waterproofing. The same phenol-formaldehyde resin is used, but it is diluted;as a result, waterproofing is low.
The marine grade plywood is comparatively costlier. The BWR grade plywood is cheaper the marine grade.
It is specialised for extreme outdoor conditions. Best fit for exterior use but not with harsh weather conditions.
Used in boat building and other marine furniture. It is not suitable for making home furniture. Suitable for making home furniture especially kitchen furniture which is exposed to a lot of water.

So from the above differences, it is clear that both the plywood serve different purposes and can only be judged on its particular application. For building home furniture, BWR grade will be the only choice, and for making boats or other marine items, the marine grade plywood will suit the best requirements.

How Do Dissimilar Grades Of Plywood Are Used?

The grade of the plywood usually determines its quality. Although plywood is being manufactured in a range of grades, some of the most commonly used grade includes MR grade plywood, BWR grade plywood, and Marine grade plywood.  These grades are also referred to as A-grade, B-grade, and C-grade plywood. Each grade of plywood has its own features, offering the required performance to users. They have their own pros and cons, as well. Therefore, knowing the plywood grade will allow you to buy one that will best fit your applications.

  • MR Grade Plywood

MR represents “moisture resistance”, so as the name suggest this grade of plywood has immense resistance to dampness. This plywood is also popularly known as commercial plywood and it is the most sought-after material for making both home, as well as office furniture. Although it is the strongest plywood, it can only be used to make indoor furniture.

  • BWR Grade Plywood

The short form BWR represents ‘Boiling Water Resistant’. It is the most appropriate material that can used effectively to make outdoor furniture. This is for the reason that this grade of plywood has immense resistance to water. It also offers better and long-lasting performance when compared to that the moisture resistant grade plywood. It is the most preferred option of material for making furniture pieces, which are likely to get soaked. This feature makes the plywood the best optional material for making all types of kitchen furniture, including the Kitchen cabinets. However, it is costlier than other plywood grades.

  • BWP Grade Plywood

Those who want to make blockboards they will usually use the BWP or Boiling Water Proof grade of plywood. Blockboards, which are made from this grade of plywood, will have great waterproofing properties.

  • Marine Grade Plywood

This grade of plywood, which is commonly called as Marine ply, has the best quality and strength among all other grades of plywood. It is mostly used for several external nautical applications, including in constructing boats and other woodwork that are to be carried out in ships.

Besides these commonly used grades of plywood, there are also several other different grades of plywood, like flexible plywood, which is most used to make arched furniture. The FR grade of plywood is mostly used to make public furniture, usually in movie theatres, and it has immense resistance to fires.

The structural grade plywood is mostly used in building construction projects and it is denoted as the industrial grade plywood.

How Do Plywood Doors Compare Against Flush Doors?

Here’s a look at the comparative study between plywood doors and flush doors. Read on to find out some of the interesting facts that will equip you with the best of information.

For laymen, most doors to be found around seem like plywood doors. However, that is not true. These days, Block board ‘Flush Doors‘ happen to be the preferred option for making most wooden doors. Such kinds of doors have solid, softwood rectangular blocks on the interior, in an end to end arrangement. Both sides of these are covered with an extremely thin ply layer that is around 2.5 mm in thickness. So which of these is better? Here is a comparison of the two with these 3 factors taken in consideration.

Hardness

Although it is possible – at least in theory – to make a door completely of plywood, it is rarely actually done. This is because long plywood strips are likelier to bend in the middle. Blockboard flush doors, in comparison, generally do not warp in a similar way. While doors made entirely of plywood are rare, flush doors are presently the ones that are presently in favor.

Composition

Plywood is generally composed of hardwood that makes the board extremely heavy. Doors made of plywood will be significantly heavier as compared to flush doors having softwood blocks within. It can be much tougher to shift and set up heavier doors, and to operate them during everyday usage.

Flush doors happen to be of two forms – one with a hollow core and another with a solid core. As the name indicates, solid core flush doors contain solid wooden blocks. Hollow core doors are supported by a honeycomb structure and have a hollow interior. Solid core doors tend to be more sound proof and are stronger in form. Most home doors are composed of flush doors with a solid core. Hollow core doors, on the other hand, are regarded as appropriate for creating partitions. The entryways of homes are generally composed of flush doors of BWP grade. BWP is an acronym for Boiling Water Proof, and tends to of exterior-grade water resistantquality.

Cost

Plywood is also more expensive as compared to block boards. Thus, the expense of doors entirely made of plywood would be higher as compared to flush doors that are lower in cost. Readymade flush doors are also manufactured by many of the top plywood firms in India. These can be set up easily and do not require any more finishing. These doors can be found in various appealing shades of color and eye-catching designs. Wood veneers of superior grade may also be utilized in the form of an overlay to improve doors’ feel and look.
